Great Grandpa Don

Hi Everybody! This week Ken Burn's documentary, The War, has been playing on PBS. While watching it, I've been continually awed and amazed at the unearthly conditions that so many soldiers braved. It has left me remembering Great Grandpa Don. To this day he is one of the kindest, most gentle men I have ever known.

I remember sitting on his knee and breathing in the sweet smell of his pipe while we flipped through the photo album containing the pictures he took while stationed in the Pacific. There were photos of endless jungle and sandy beaches and Grandpa Don looking young and handsome and taller than everyone else. As I looked through the pictures, I clearly remember him explaining to me "Now honey, I didn't want to kill anyone, but it was them or me and if I didn't shoot them they were going to kill me." For some reason I've never forgotten that moment. Does anyone else have Great Grandpa Don memories they'd like to share? Does anyone have a picture they'd like to share? I know there are a lot of good ones, but sady, I don't have any. :(!

What a great topic! I will have to look around for some photos. Does everyone have a copy of his little booklets...remembrances from the War? It's such interesting material. I guess we should make copies for the folks who don't have them, but want them.
